OT # 38: “Beside Me
There Is No Savior”
Purpose:
To help us understand that
Jesus Christ is incomparable
in His devotion to us and that He has a great work for
us to do.
A
correct idea of God’s character, perfections and attributes is necessary for us
to be able to exercise faith in Him (See Joseph
Smith, Lectures on Faith 3:2, 4).
re: Isaiah 44:22 (See also D&C
18:11).
“[I]n making an Atonement for
the sins of the world [Christ] bore the weight … and the burden of the sins of
all men… [T]he debt is paid, the
redemption made”
(Teachings of
Presidents of the Church: John Taylor, 44).
re: Isaiah 47 22 (See also D&C 1:16, D&C 64:24, D&C
133:14
“[T]he
end of the world is the destruction of the wicked” and not “of the
earth, as many have imagined” (Teachings of
the Prophet Joseph Smith, 100).
“This
world … belongs to Satan. He created it; he is its father and its god.… The
earth itself is the Lord's, and he is its ruler [D&C 88:25; Helaman
12:7-8] but the world (the corrupt society on
earth) is under the rule of him who is the god of this world.” (Elder Bruce R. McConkie, Mormon Doctrine, 324.)
“The world … has never been under [God’s]
control”
(President John Taylor, The Government of God, 85).]
re: Isaiah 49:16
“[T]he
passage where the Savior [says], 'I have graven thee upon the palms of my
hands...' [can serve] as a reminder of scars in the palms of the Savior,
suffered for our sins [and of] the love the Savior has for us in willingly
being scarred, bruised, broken, and torn for us” (Elder
Keith R. Edwards, Oct 2006 CR).
“He has felt your pain. He
has declared, ‘I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands.’ The Savior is …
reaching out to each of us, bidding us ‘Come unto me.’”
(Elder Neil L. Anderson, Oct 2009 CR).
“The Lord loves you. He knows
your hopes and your disappointments. He will not forget you because your pains
and your suffering are continually before Him.”
(Sister Silvia Allred, Oct 2010 CR.)
“The Lord has promised us
that He will not forget us because He has ‘graven [us] upon the palms of [His]
hands.’ And our promise to Him is that we will not forget Him, for we have
engraven Him in our hearts.” (Sister
Susan Tanner, April 2003, CR).
OT # 39: “How Beautiful upon the
Mountains,” Isaiah 50–53, Additional
reading: Mosiah 14–15.
(See Old
Testament Class Member Study Guide, 25–26 at www.lds.org)
What does Isaiah 53:2–5 tell us about the life of the
Savior?
Why can He understand our sorrows and our grief?
(See Alma 7:11–13; Hebrews 2:16–18; 4:15.)
How have you sensed that he understands your sorrows
and grief?
Why was the Savior willing to suffer [so much for us]?
(See 1 Nephi 19:9.)
Isaiah prophesied about a
number of events that were connected with the Atonement of the Savior. What do the following verses teach about
the Savior’s love and His atoning sacrifice?
Isaiah 50:5–7 (see also Matthew 26:39; Philippians
2:8)
Isaiah 51:6 (see also Mosiah 16:9; Alma 34:10)
Isaiah 53:2–4 (see also Alma 7:11–13; Hebrews 2:16–18)
Isaiah 53:8–11 (see also Mosiah 15:10–13)
