The Tribes of Israel
In her wonderful talk to the youth this past Sunday, Sister Wendy Nelson related an experience in
Russia when she asked people to stand according to their lineage as declared in their Patriarchal Blessing. She mentioned that all were represented except Levi. That got me thinking since I had always thought that Levi was not a tribe since they were not allotted land, rather they were allotted cities. And Joseph's inheritance was split between Ephraim and Manasseh.
Well I found out from this Ensign article by John Tvedtnes titled "The 'Other Tribes'" that there is a distinction between Blood Israel and Land Israel. What is referred to in Patriarchal Blessings is Blood Israel—the original sons of Jacob/Israel.
